11-11-11

Tomorrow is Veterans Remembrance Day. If you see someone in uniform, shake their hand and say Thank You!

Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
between the crosses, row on row,
that mark our place; and in the sky
the larks, still bravely singing, fly
scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
we lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
the torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
we shall not sleep, though poppies grow In in Flanders fields.

This poem was written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918) Canadian Army, after the terrible battle of Ypres salient, Belgium on December 3rd, 1915.
You can read the story about it at this link http://www.greatwar.nl/frames/default-poppies.html

(thank you Sunny x)

Think Think Think

I'm contemplating my next move. Not sure if I want to add more to it or not. I do like the simplicity of this one, her expression says a lot. Will put away tomorrow and think about what I'm going do. Oil on canvas, I believe the canvas is 10inches by 10inches.

Seems my easel is broken...

Oh well. It won't lock in place any longer there at the sliding bit...so we use the balancing act, and being gentle helps as well. Crayola boxes are good too..I use whatever I have around, and I keep crayolas around to remind me to be a kid. LOL.

As you can see this is Santa, I know a little early, but getting the jump on things. I think. He's 10x8 inches..and on gallery wrap. My daughter said the painting made her want hot apple cider! LOL or HOHOHOHO!

"Well, Jane,

........it just goes to show you, it's always something--if it ain't one thing, it's another." Roseanne Roseannadanna

Roseanne was right.

I was on a roll, I felt like I was anyway...now I've had to pause *again* recently, because of all the fires around us. Its sad. Our area of Texas has been on fire since I believe this past Monday. So far we've been on a little island, the fire going around us. Its still moving. And is a bit closer. I wish the wind would stop blowing. I've found it difficult to focus on anything else. We're waiting now, for more news. My art is always on my mind, I can't sit still long enough to work on it. I've packed up the drawings I will take, and the paintings I could pack as well. I love our home and my little studio, and hope they're here next week and the next and so on and on. Anyway, if you pray, please pray that the fire stays away, or that they finally put it out - and that we're all safe. Our firefighters have been working around the clocks. We've had a DC-10 flying over head not 1000 ft up dropping fire retardant. Helicopters too, Blackhawks dropping water from area lakes. I'm so thankful for them. Most are volunteers. Bastrop, Texas last I heard had a 20 mile deep and 24 mile wide fire, thats a lot of people without homes. I feel for them, if fires coming theres no where to hide, you have to run.

If anyone is reading this thanks for stopping by. Last time it was a hurricane, this time fire...who knew? This is a first for me, goes to show you, if you don't like the weather in Texas - wait a minute and it'll change.

another day another oil painting

another attempt at another self portrait. note to self..get a hand mirror. i know some people use one..i never have..or maybe i have..i'll look. anyway, its on the list. need one when i'm too flippin' far from the mirror. for detail..if you like that kind of thing. trying my best to hold a pose - thinking..where was i?? what tha? juggling everything and holding a pose is difficult (yes i'm complaining) ~and ~ painting at the same time...yikes. but its so cool. if it works. and what i'm going to do is..do one, as i did these two, and put them down, and do the next. this is what happened today. different lighting. different all around. they all will be. next --unless i have am lucky enough to have a model -- pray pray pray -- it will be me again in charcoal. i know you're enjoying this so much. try to contain yourself. really.

Oil painting - Self Portrait

today i picked up my oils and began to paint - i had began something yesterday ---didn't care for it, so i trashed it. really i just leaned it against the wall. maybe i can save it from the watery depths of hell later. not now though. need a distraction. but need to paint. no one around to be my victim but me so..i sat. which is difficult as you know. actually its a great thing to do, as you know as well i'm sure. so i'll be doing more. so sorry in advance for the many self portraits that you'll soon be seeing. did this quickly, as i goofed around with the other too long, and had so much time in my ''work'' day to actually work. a couple hours at best. with breaks for barking dogs who demand my attention. and a cuppa break or two.
