Dawn McKelvy on MySpace

Journey (so far)

Dawn McKelvy spent her childhood traveling between her native Texas and Wales, the ancient land of her father. She demonstrated a prodigious artistic ability early in life and immersed herself in drawing and other forms of art during her youth. Later, responsibilities of marriage and motherhood took precedence in her life and her talent lay dormant until 1997. It was then she rediscovered art in its many forms. She started to sketch and paint again, beginning a long journey of self discovery.

In 2008 she returned to the purity of drawing the human figure. Dawn considers the human body God’s masterpiece and pays homage to it through her work. She feels the power of the human spirit when she works, and channels it into each piece with a quiet intensity. People say her work possesses a dreamlike quality; that they can feel the emotions speak to them. Dawn strives to convey this empathy, matching every stroke to a mood invoked by the subject.

Dawn is currently focused on the evolution of her artistic style. The simplicity of charcoal, with its contrasting values and subtle nuances of shading is her first love. When she chooses to paint with oils, this love of drawing translates to a vibrant application of color, evoking the emotional connection people feel toward her charcoals.

Dawn has won numerous awards from local Art Leagues and the Lone Star Art Guild. Most recently she received one of only fifteen honorable mentions for her submission to Artist’s Magazine in a national contest involving thousands of entries.
